Tokyo Game Show 2026 Hit by Typhoon: 257,642 Attended

The 30th anniversary edition was the biggest on paper: a record 1,138 exhibitors from 53 countries and regions across 3,999 booths. Then the weather intervened on day five. CESA's official count of 257,642 is below both 2025 (263,101) and the 2024 record (274,739). Here is the day-by-day attendance curve, the record exhibitor scale, and why this show still matters more than the numbers suggest.
一、The First Five-Day Show, Minus the Fifth Day
Tokyo Game Show had run four days for three decades. For 2026, organizer CESA stretched it to five, explaining that the extra day was meant to lower crowd density and increase hands-on play opportunities.
Typhoon No. 25 Voids the Finale
On September 21 — the scheduled fifth day — organizers cancelled the show outright, citing Typhoon No. 25 closing on Makuhari Messe in Chiba. Tickets for September 21 were refunded through the original purchase channel; September 20 tickets were explicitly not refundable. Some stage programming moved to online streams.
The first five-day experiment in TGS history ended up as four days.
The Day-by-Day Curve Peaks on September 19
CESA published the breakdown on September 21: 53,630 attendees on the first business day, September 17; 52,545 on the second business day, September 18; 78,678 on September 19, the busiest day of the run; and 72,789 on September 20. Four days, 257,642 people.
Against 2025's 263,101 and 2024's record 274,739, that makes 2026 the lowest of the three years — though it is worth remembering it did four days against everyone else's four days.
二、A Record on Scale: 1,138 Exhibitors From 53 Countries
Attendance did not set a record. Scale did.
Overseas Exhibitors Outnumbered Japanese Ones for the First Time
Reporting from the September 17 opening, the Chosun Ilbo's English edition put the show at a record 1,138 companies from 53 countries and regions across 3,999 booths. Of those, 598 were overseas exhibitors — the first time they outnumbered the 540 Japanese firms on the floor.
Organizers had expected roughly 300,000 visitors across the full run. Without the typhoon, that number was plausibly in reach.
GTA 6 Was Not Playable — So PlayStation Built It a Theater
The biggest "visible but untouchable" item of the show was Grand Theft Auto VI. It offered no playable demo, but PlayStation dedicated an entire theater to extended presentations of the game.
Other floor highlights: Hideo Kojima confirmed Bill Skarsgård as the lead of PHYSINT, which Xbox picked up for publishing after PlayStation stepped away; Bandai Namco's Ace Combat 8 was playable throughout the show; and Atlus and Sega locked a release window for Persona 4 Revival. CESA chairman Haruhiro Tsujimoto used the opening ceremony to argue that games will keep rising in importance within Japan's content industry.
三、Why Tokyo Game Show Keeps Getting More Important
With E3 Gone, It Is the Show Where You Still Hold a Controller
E3 is dead, and Western publishers increasingly prefer filmed showcases. TGS bets the other way: that being on the floor with a controller is irreplaceable. CESA's stated reasoning is that hands-on play is what actually gauges sales potential and shapes development direction.
The industry math backs the approach. According to CESA, Japan's content industry exports reached about ¥5.8 trillion in 2023, with games accounting for 62% of that — a larger share than semiconductors or steel.
Korea Showed Up in Full
Among the overseas contingent, Korea was the most committed: Nexon, Netmarble and NCSoft plus Smilegate all attended in force, debuting titles aimed at the global market, and non-gaming players Samsung Electronics and Naver Webtoon took B2B booths. Japanese-Chinese exchange at the show was reported to have decreased over the same period, leaving room for Korea to fill.
四、The Counterargument: A Five-Day Format Is a Gamble by Design
Stretching the show to five days bets on two things: that visitors will take an extra day off, and that publishers will staff an extra day on the floor. The typhoon exposed how fragile that expansion is — a day of booth costs, staff time, and rebooked flights all land on exhibitors and attendees, not on the weather.
There is also a marginal-returns problem. Four days drew 257,642 people, about 64,000 a day. Had the fifth day run at September 20's pace of 72,789, the total would have approached 330,000. That was the entire point of the "longest TGS ever." Now it survives only as a hypothetical.
The 2027 edition is already dated for September 16–20 — again five days.
五、My Take: The Cancelled Day Is the Most Expensive Day
I do not read this as a failure. With 257,642 visitors across four days, 1,138 exhibitors and overseas companies outnumbering domestic ones for the first time, TGS's foundation is intact. And organizers made the right call pulling the plug under a typhoon warning — memories of Typhoon No. 15 hitting Makuhari in 2019 have not faded.
What is worth remembering is something else: the cost of the physical-show format keeps concentrating on organizers and exhibitors. An online showcase needs no refunds, no rebooked travel, no torn-down stage fees. TGS can sustain five days because the Japanese market still values being there in person. But conviction cannot hedge against a typhoon. It can only hedge against irrelevance.
If next year's five days complete without incident, 2026 becomes a footnote: the year they tried five days for the first time, and a typhoon took one of them. Come discuss in the Gghubs comments.
