Hardware is falling and profit is climbing. Sony shipped 2.6 million PS5 consoles in the quarter, down 35% from 4 million a year earlier, for 97.9 million lifetime. Operating profit in the games division went from ¥120.4 billion to ¥220.1 billion. PSN monthly active users hit 127 million, total play time rose 4%, and Marvel's Wolverine sold 2.4 million copies in roughly 50 days. Sony CFO Lin Tao also gave a rare PS6 timetable. The real story is that Sony has changed how it makes money.
一、Four numbers that do not point the same way
The PS5 turns six this month. In the quarter ending September 30, Sony sold 2.6 million consoles, against 4 million in the same quarter last year — a drop of exactly 35%. The first quarter was worse: 1.6 million, down from 2.5 million.
Hardware down, software up
Sony sold 88.2 million PS5 and PS4 games in the quarter, 7.9 million more than a year earlier. First-party titles accounted for 8.2 million of those, up 1.9 million. Hardware fell by 1.4 million units while software rose by 7.9 million — the two curves are moving in opposite directions.
97.9 million, one step from 100 million
At this pace the PS5 crosses 100 million on the next report. That would make it the fourth PlayStation console to reach the mark, after PS1, PS2 and PS4; PS3 stopped at roughly 87.4 million.
二 、Where the 83% actually comes from
Operating profit was ¥220.1 billion against ¥120.4 billion a year earlier. Run the raw numbers: 220.1 divided by 120.4 is 1.828, or 82.8%, which most outlets round to 83%.
A low base inflates the jump
Several outlets noted that last year's quarter included one-time charges, which depressed the base. A meaningful part of the 83% is "last year was bad," not "this year was exceptional." Revenue growth of 9% is the cleaner read on business momentum.
Two different percentages are circulating
Coverage of these results contains both 83% and 89%. The 83% figure ties to the ¥220.1 billion operating profit and can be recomputed from the raw numbers; the 89% figure was not defined in the reports that used it. Cite the yen figures, not the headline percentage.
三、127 million monthly users matters more than unit sales
PSN monthly active users reached 127 million in September, up 7% from 119 million a year earlier and the highest September on record. Total play time rose 4% year on year.
Sony has changed its own scoreboard
When hardware stops growing, keeping people inside the ecosystem is the win. Those 127 million accounts feed three revenue pipes at once: subscriptions, in-game spending and platform fees.
四、Marvel's Wolverine: 2.4 million copies
Marvel's Wolverine sold through 2.4 million copies as of November 4, roughly 50 days after launch. The other recent first-party title, Ghost of Yotei, has reached 3.3 million since its October 2025 release.
First-party is only 9.3% of unit sales, but it carries the margin
8.2 million first-party copies out of 88.2 million total is 9.3%. The share is small, yet first-party software skips platform fees and drives subscriptions, so its contribution to profit is far larger than that ratio suggests.
五、PS6 and the end of discs follow the same logic
CFO Lin Tao said on the earnings call that the PS6 is "progressing as scheduled," and that Sony expects "solid progress" on preparing its next-generation platform in 2027. She framed falling PS5 sales as a normal late-cycle pattern.
Disc manufacturing ends in January 2028
Sony has already decided to stop manufacturing PlayStation discs by January 2028. A rising digital share, rising services revenue and falling hardware sales all point one way: converting a customer who buys a disc into an account that stays.
六、The risk angle: GTA 6 and higher prices
The next quarter is Sony's traditional peak — it sold 7.9 million consoles in the same quarter of fiscal 2025. GTA 6 launches inside that window, and whether it bends the hardware curve back up depends on stock and price.
Sony raised PS5 prices earlier this year. Higher prices plus end-of-cycle demand explain the decline. The open question is what happens if even GTA 6 fails to lift hardware: 100 million may be where this generation ends.
七、My read: Sony stopped selling machines
97.9 million consoles are an installed base. 127 million monthly users are cash flow. Hardware is the door; software and services are the ledger. An 83% profit increase is not a sign of selling better — it is a sign of collecting better.
That also explains why Sony can announce the end of discs in its best quarter in years. It no longer needs hardware margins, so it no longer has to defend the hardware format.
