Phantom Blade Zero arrives on October 29 with 30 primary weapons and 25 secondary "Phantom Edge" tools. Producer Liang Qiwei says the team is not chasing perfect balance across all of them, because this is a single-player game. That sounds almost heretical in an industry that treats balance as a virtue. It may also be the clearest statement S-Game has made about what this game actually is: not an arena, but a series of puzzles where the answer is a weapon.
What we know: 30 primary weapons, 25 secondaries
In an interview with PCGamesN, Liang confirmed 30 primary weapons plus 25 secondary Phantom Edges. Weapons do more than change damage numbers — they alter the animation set of protagonist Soul — and the team wants players to cycle through them rather than lock into one loadout .
Liang Qiwei: a single-player game doesn't need perfect balance
His reasoning is blunt. Because the game is single-player, the team did not force every weapon into parity. Each has strengths, weaknesses and a purpose, and players are encouraged to pick according to enemy and situation. Weapons are how you solve problems here.
The game won't tell you which one to bring
A concrete example from the interview: shield-bearing enemies fall faster to an axe or a large flower blade, while some encounters require a specific weapon or style. The game does not point at the correct answer. You work it out.
The 134.85GB preload is the bill for that content
On October 17, PlayStation-focused data account PlayStationSize reported that the PS5 preload will be 134.85GB, going live on October 27. It is not official data, but the reaction was real: one player's quoted response was, roughly, "good lord, I did not expect it to be this big," while others said the size is fine if the game delivers.
Do the arithmetic on the design. Thirty primary weapons plus 25 secondaries, each with its own moveset and feel, is a content monster by construction. 134GB is less a sign of bad compression than the physical weight of that decision.
A playtester found the weapon that defuses a boss
In its hands-on session, PCGamesN noticed that one weapon weakens the main attack of the fire-breathing dragon-mask boss — most likely the lion dance encounter — making the fight noticeably easier. That detail is worth more than any trailer, because it proves the puzzle is real and not marketing language.
It also exposes the danger. Once "find the weapon that turns the boss off" becomes the known route, 30 weapons can collapse into three mandatory picks and 27 collectibles.
Why this matters: Chinese action games are betting on systems, not screenshots
For several years the dominant playbook for Chinese action games was visuals first — build a demo that travels well at expos, then figure out the systems. S-Game is doing the reverse: leading with weapon counts, counters and animation differences.
That shift follows the cost structure. Visuals can be outsourced or bought as assets; systems cannot. And once a system holds, players generate the content themselves — build sharing, boss speedruns, weapon-only challenges. None of that can be purchased as ad inventory.
The risks: 30 weapons are an asset and a liability
The first risk is repetition. If the 30 weapons are reskins with different numbers, patience runs out inside ten hours. Liang's claim that every weapon changes Soul's animation has to survive contact with players' hands.
The GTA6 problem
The second risk is the calendar. October 29 sits weeks away from what the industry calls one of the most anticipated launches of all time, GTA 6 . A game that asks for dozens of hours of weapon experimentation is exactly the kind of release that loses the room two weeks in.
The third risk is an IP running ahead of its proof. Liang says the team already has firm ideas for a sequel, DLC, animation and even film, but will decide what to pursue after seeing how this game performs. That is confidence and pressure in the same sentence.
My take: it isn't selling wuxia, it's selling the click
Wuxia is the skin. The skeleton is problem-solving. The real wuxia feeling is not a flashy combo but the moment you understand the fight — axe through the shield, flower blade against the stance, an obscure weapon that cuts a boss's signature move. If 30 weapons deliver that, the game is selling intelligence, not nostalgia.
Which is both my hope and my worry. Make the solution a system and players argue about tactics. Make it a treasure map and they just open a guide.
We have blocked October 29 in the GameHub review calendar; weapon differences and boss counters will be tested one by one after unlock, with updates at gghubs.com.
Three questions players keep asking
Are the 30 weapons just reskins?
A: The official line is that every weapon changes Soul's animation set and that counters exist, such as axes and large flower blades against shields. Whether the differences hold up needs testing after the October 29 unlock.
Is the 134.85GB preload real?
A: It comes from PlayStationSize and refers to a preload on October 27, not from S-Game. Releases over 100GB are common this generation; the store page is the final word.
PC or PS5?
A: Both launch on October 29. The PS5 version can be preloaded at 134.85GB two days early, while the PC version suits players who want to tune resolution and frame rate.
