For the week of October 15 to 21, the top-grossing mobile game in Japan was Arknights, up six places with revenue rising 70% week over week. On the same chart, Genshin Impact fell from No. 23 to No. 49 with revenue down 46%, and Honkai: Star Rail slipped from No. 41 to No. 44, down 6% . A game that launched on the Japanese App Store in January 2020 pushed two of HoYoverse's flagships down to 44th and 49th. That is worth unpacking.
The numbers: what separates first place from 49th
Here is the full movement for the week:
| Game | This week | Last week | Revenue change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arknights | 1 | 7 | +70% |
| Arknights: Endfield | 16 | 81 | +334% |
| Zenless Zone Zero | 22 | 95 | +273% |
| Wuthering Waves | 21 | 38 | +61% |
| Honkai: Star Rail | 44 | 41 | -6% |
| Genshin Impact | 49 | 23 | -46% |
Every swing traces to an update
The spread is not ten percent. It is 334% against -46%, and that only maps to one variable: update day.
Why Arknights took first: the October 14 patch
Arknights released main story chapter 17 on October 14, alongside a limited operator banner. Downloads rose 37% week over week, revenue rose 70%, and the game moved from seventh to first .
The lesson is not that an old game still has legs. A main-story chapter paired with a limited banner remains the strongest revenue lever in Japanese gacha: players pay for story progress and for a character who may not return for a year.
Endfield jumped from 81st to 16th, ZZZ from 95th to 22nd
Two other moves were more extreme. Arknights: Endfield shipped its core version update on October 15 with a new six-star operator and climbed from 81st to 16th, revenue up 334%. Zenless Zone Zero launched Version 3.3 on October 21 with S-rank agent Fionie and climbed from 95th to 22nd, revenue up 273% .
Both numbers say the same thing: outside an update window, these games sit below 80th. The Japanese gacha chart is not a water level, it is a pulse.
What Star Rail is waiting for: the 4.8 crossover
Star Rail's 6% dip looks minor, but the game is in a clearly defined waiting period.
HoYoverse has confirmed Version 4.8 will carry a two-way crossover with Zenless Zone Zero: Ellen Joe and Astra Yao join Star Rail, while Robin visits New Eridu. It is the first official crossover between two flagship titles . Versions 4.6 and 4.7 each run a single new five-star with no reruns, giving players two months to bank currency.
Analysis: gacha money is flowing back from new releases to live ops
Look across the chart and a larger structure appears. Most of the top 25 are long-running properties: Monster Strike, FGO, Puzzle & Dragons, Dokkan Battle, Knives Out. New titles rarely hold the top for long, because acquisition costs keep newcomers out of the front row. If you cannot buy cheap users, you extract revenue from the ones you have.
That also explains why HoYoverse is playing its biggest card as an internal crossover. A new game takes three to five years to build; a crossover ships in three months. A new game requires buying users again; a crossover merges two existing pools into one. In a market with no audience growth left, that is the highest-efficiency move available.
The risk: this is one week, and it excludes PC
Three caveats matter, or the conclusions above will be misread.
Three caveats
First, this is a single week. The week before, eFootball topped the Japanese chart; the week before that, SD Gundam G Generation Eternal did. Weekly leaders rotate constantly.
Second, Sensor Tower's panel covers the App Store and Google Play only, excluding PC and console . Genshin Impact, Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero all ship on PC and PS5, and none of that revenue appears here. "Genshin fell to 49th" means its Japanese mobile revenue fell that week, not that the game's overall business did.
Third, the chart publishes percentage changes, not absolute revenue. A 334% jump from a low base is not a large sum of money.
The other front: a leak case worth 1 million yuan
One more story from the same week deserves attention.
According to Sohu on October 28, an individual illegally obtained and cracked build content from a Honkai: Star Rail test version and was ordered to pay 1 million yuan in damages. In the same week, Shanghai's first case involving AI voice conversion built on cloned voice data from 63 Genshin Impact characters was ruled an infringement.
Both cases are one case: establishing legal ownership over version information and character voices. Preview scarcity directly drives banner revenue, and voice data underpins licensing. If either can be taken freely, the crossover-and-limited-banner model springs a leak.
My read: the chart measures release schedules, not quality
The conclusion is uncomfortable but simple. This chart does not measure how good a game is. It measures when the last patch landed.
Arknights won on chapter 17. Endfield surged on a core version update. Zenless Zone Zero surged on its 3.3 banner. None of the three changed in quality that week; only the presence of new content changed.
So HoYoverse's problem in Japan is not product quality. It is an empty slot in the schedule. The 4.8 crossover fills that slot, and it does not need to prove Star Rail is better than Arknights, only that there is something to do on the same day. FAQ
Is it true that Arknights is No. 1 in Japan?
A: For the single week of October 15 to 21, 2026, yes. Revenue rose 70% week over week and Arknights moved from seventh to first, per Sensor Tower data published by 4Gamer on October 26.
What does Genshin Impact falling to No. 49 mean?
A: Only that its Japanese mobile revenue dropped 46% that week. The Sensor Tower panel excludes PC and PS5, so it says nothing about the game's overall revenue.
When does the Star Rail 4.8 crossover launch?
A: Version 4.8, expected in winter 2026, with Ellen Joe and Astra Yao joining Star Rail. HoYoverse has not announced an exact date.
Why do older games beat new releases?
A: Acquisition costs in Japan keep new titles off the front row. Long-running games generate revenue pulses through story chapters and limited banners, as Arknights, FGO and Monster Strike all demonstrate.
