A lower bar actually means more ways to lay things out. This Palworld material guide sticks to production lines, not boss fights, and answers three questions: how Ancient Bark, ore and Chromite connect into one chain, how to read Work Suitability, and how to actually schedule the few Pals in your base.

First, Match Your Version Number
Palworld 1.0 launched on July 10, 2026, ending early access with 72 new Pals (47 new plus 25 variants) for a total of 287, and raised the player level cap from 65 to 80. Version numbers have followed the 1.0.x series since: v1.0.3 on August 12, v1.0.4 on September 7, v1.0.5 on September 15. The build in your hands, v1.0.5, fixes an issue where terrain and building textures loaded at a visibly reduced resolution for some players.
This is not filler. Plenty of production-line guides online are still pinned to early-access numbers, with Early Access written right in the title see those two words and you can close the tab. Staff a base from a six-month-old lineup chart and your efficiency will most likely not match the current build.
v1.0.4 is the version that matters. Three changes touch production lines: the Work Suitability requirement for gathering Ancient Bark dropped to Lv.1, Palpedia gained name search and now shows Work Suitability descriptions, and admins can set a building cap for each player. On top of that, the default frame-rate cap on PC went to 120.
One point needs spelling out, because we have seen too many people get it wrong in the comments: dropping to Lv.1 does not mean every Pal can gather. Only Pals that actually carry the Gathering suitability benefit from the change. Drop one without it on the node and it will not work it will just stand there watching you.

Ancient Bark Is a Job Anyone Can Take Now
Palworld Ancient Bark is a common material for construction and some equipment. Before the change it took a higher-suitability gathering Pal to make real progress, which tied the entire build chain to those few Pals. Send them off on an expedition, or let them queue up somewhere else, and construction stopped right where it was come back and that slot is still waiting. With the requirement at Lv.1, almost anything with Gathering can step in, and the line suddenly has slack.
Before, losing one Pal cut the supply. Now you swap one out and the line keeps turning. When you are pushing three or four build projects at once, the difference is obvious.
So how many? Two to three gathering slots per base: one dedicated to Ancient Bark, one covering wood and fiber, the third floating. Higher levels work faster, but Lv.1 is enough to get the job done start the work first, worry about speed later. When you cannot even fill the work slots, agonizing over levels means nothing. Palworld breeding picks, once you understand them properly, will speed things up further.
There is one more thing that gets skipped most often: gathering and hauling come in pairs. What your Pals gather has to be carried back to a chest with Transporting. Place gatherers and no haulers and the materials pile up on the ground it looks like a bumper harvest while the chests sit empty. Hauling slots do not need high levels, just enough to keep up; the count is what matters.
Getting everyone in place does not make for a pretty picture. Materials that never reach a chest count as never gathered, so the next thing to look at is how the whole line connects.

How Wood, Ore and Chromite Fit Together
A base that runs itself is really three lines meshing together: Lumbering, Mining, and the conveyor belt formed by Transporting and Handiwork.
Wood, stone and ore are the three most basic inputs, and they map onto Lumbering and Mining. Put one or two Pals each on Lumbering and Mining and leave the remaining slots to Transporting and Handiwork that is the most stable four-Pal setup. Stable does not mean highest output; it means the line will not stall the moment you log off to do something else.
Chromite is a different tier a mid-to-late game material that has to be mined in specific regions. The official patch notes never list coordinates, so hunting for exact spots in guides is mostly wasted effort. Before you set out, just check the required Gathering level in Palpedia; since v1.0.4 it supports name search and spells out Work Suitability.
Ancient Bark's output rhythm is simple: it comes from gathering, not from drops. Park the gathering slot beside a single respawn point and pair it with a hauler, and output gets much steadier. Gather here today and there tomorrow and your Pals walk the same stretch of road again for every trip all of it wasted.

Work Suitability Is About Speed, Not Permission
A lot of players treat Work Suitability as an entry requirement. That misunderstanding is expensive.
Lv.1 through Lv.4 decide efficiency, not whether a Pal can do the job at all (Ancient Bark is the exception, flattened to Lv.1 in v1.0.4). When you lay out a line, put high levels on the bottleneck slots and low levels on the redundant ones. Do it the other way round send a Lv.4 miner to haul chests and yes, it hauls fast, but what you give up is ore output. That math never works out.
Bases cap how many Pals they hold, and the exact number is on the in-game base screen (the patch notes never give a single figure). Slots are limited, so there is only one rule: cover the bottleneck first, fill the redundant slots after. If gathering is your bottleneck, max out gathering; if Handiwork is, shift there. Copying someone else's headcount usually does not help, because their bottleneck is rarely yours.
The next step up is raising each Pal's ceiling. 1.0 added Awakening (spending Radiant Gems from the World Tree) and Mutation (a low chance of a stronger Pal when breeding). Neither conflicts with how you divide the line they make the Pal already on the job stronger. That is late-game work; do not worry about it early.
Once the slots are in order, what holds you back is no longer materials it is your level.

Levels, Jetragon and the Endgame
1.0 raised the player level cap from 65 to 80. Level gates the technology and gear you can unlock, which means upgrading your line depends on your own level getting there first. However capable your Pals are, an unopened tech tree builds nothing.
v1.0.3 made one genuinely practical change: Jetragon-related tech now unlocks at level 70 instead of 79, and PalGear needs fewer materials. You can start at 70 no more grinding out those last nine levels.
On the endgame side, 1.0 added the World Tree region and its boss. Do not get the order backwards: stabilise the line, then push. Take a half-crippled production line into the endgame and you will come back to empty chests and start refilling materials from scratch. Once is enough.
With versions and production lines out of the way, a lighter note to finish.
The Popularity Poll, Side by Side and Collaborations
The 2026 global popularity poll results came out on October 20. The top three Pals are Sekhmet, Solenne and Chillet; the top three characters are Zoe, Auri and Saya. The full ranking is on the official poll site did yours make it?
The same announcement says the next update, Palworld: Side by Side, arrives in winter 2026; its contents and exact date are still under wraps. Winter is not far off, and the useful thing to do now is lay a solid foundation for your base and lines, so that the day it lands you are not starting from zero.
Separately, a Palworld Graveyard Keeper 2 Steam bundle went live on October 28. It is only a purchase format and does not affect game content buy it if it suits you.
Back to where we started: whether a base runs itself comes down to someone gathering and someone hauling. A change that lowers the bar to Lv.1 does not hand you easier it hands you more ways to arrange things. What your layout finally looks like depends on when you are willing to stop and watch what the few Pals in your base are actually doing.

Palworld FAQ
Can any Pal gather Ancient Bark now?

Where do you mine Chromite?
A: The official notes list no coordinates. Check the Gathering level in Palpedia first, then search the map.
How many gathering Pals does a base need?
A: Two to three gatherers plus one hauler, covering the bottleneck slot first.
When is the next major update?
A: Officially, Side by Side arrives in winter 2026; no exact date yet.
For a version-by-version comparison of production layouts and patch changes, GameHub's guide section archives by release number, so you can check your setup against it whenever the build changes.
Action Checklist
- Confirm you are on v1.0.5 do not follow early-access guides.
- Keep two to three gathering Pals in the base, one of them dedicated to Ancient Bark.
- Add one hauling Pal so materials do not pile up on the ground.
- Jetragon tech unlocks at level 70 and needs fewer materials than before.
- Max out your lines and your level before Side by Side lands in winter.
Hauling gets its own line here because no matter how fast your gatherers are, materials sitting on the ground never count as output until they reach a chest and that is the slot people cut first.
